Updating Goodnews

Goodnews does not update itself, and WordPress will not show you an update notice for it on its own. Updating is handled by a separate plugin, or done by hand.

Updating with Envato Market

Goodnews bundles the free Envato Market plugin, which checks ThemeForest for updates to items you own and lets you install them from your dashboard.

1. If Envato Market is not already active, go to Appearance → Install Plugins and install and activate it.
2. Go to Envato Market in your dashboard menu and connect it with your Envato API token.
3. When a Goodnews update is available, it appears on the Envato Market screen. Click to install it.

Updating manually

If you do not want to install Envato Market, you can update by hand:

1. Go to your ThemeForest Downloads page and download the latest version of Goodnews.
2. Connect to your server with FTP.
3. Delete the existing goodnews5 folder in wp-content/themes/.
4. Upload the new goodnews5 folder in its place.

Before you update

Direct edits to the theme's files are lost on update. If you have changed any file inside goodnews5 — through Appearance → Theme File Editor or otherwise — copy those changes somewhere safe first. Updating replaces the whole goodnews5 folder.

What an update does not change

Updating the theme does not remove or reset your published content, your theme options, your menus or your widgets. Options that no longer exist in a newer version are simply unused; nothing that already worked is deleted.
